FPCA APPLAUDS GOVERNOR, LEGISLATURE FOR AFFIRMING CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN FLORIDA
Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Police Chiefs Association today released a statement applauding Governor Scott and the Florida Legislature for their commitment to reintroducing the death penalty as a violent crime deterrent in Florida. Senators Randolph Bracy (D-Ocoee) and Rob Bradley (R-Orange Park) and Representatives Chris Sprowls (R-Clearwater) and Julio Gonzalez (R-Venice) sponsored the legislation, and Governor Scott signed it into law earlier this week.
“Some crimes really are so truly heinous that capital punishment is the appropriate sentence, like the case against Markeith Loyd, the defendant who shot and killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend, gunned down Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton and caused the death of Orange County Deputy First Class Norman Lewis. Without the steadfast commitment of our Governor and our Legislature to public safety, we would not have the necessary tools to fight violent crime in our state,” said Coconut Creek Police Chief Butch Arenal, president of the association. “We are grateful for the leadership of these legislators who sponsored the legislation and to the Governor for taking swift action by signing it into law.”
