US Marshal William B. Berger US Marshal, Middle District of Florida
William B. Berger was sworn in as the United States Marshal of the Middle District of Florida on February 7, 2011. The District is comprised of five offices located in Tampa, Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, and Ft. Myers. Marshal Berger began his law enforcement career with the City of Miami Police Department in 1974 where he worked and commanded the following entities: Radio Patrol, Training, Legal, Budget, Planning, Homicide, Robbery, Internal Affairs and the Miami Police Academy. Marshal Berger served as the Police Chief in the City of Palm Bay, Florida from 2004-2011 and the Police Chief of the City of North Miami Beach from 1989-2004. Marshal Berger also had the distinction of being elected and served as the President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), an organization of over 30,000 members, in 2001-2002 and was the President of the Florida Chiefs of Police Association (FPCA) in 1996-1997.
During his tenure as a Police Chief, Marshal Berger received the Florida Police Chief Distinguished Director’s Award as the “Chief of the Year” and now referred to as the Chief Executive of the Year award in 1992, 2003, 2006, and 2016. Marshal Berger has also received the prestigious FPCA Presidents Award in 2007 and 2017. Marshal Berger was inducted in the State Capitol Law Enforcement Hall of Fame in 2017. In his 40+ law enforcement year career, Marshal Berger has received over 100 awards and citations for his law enforcement activities. Marshal Berger is a recognized subject matter expert in police practices both in state and federal court and for the United States Justice Department.
He was one of the founding fathers of the State of Florida Police Accreditation Commission. He has been an instructor in the areas of Forensics, Police Use of Deadly Force Technology and currently instructs for the FPCA in their Future Chiefs Seminar. He also was responsible for the creation of the IACP Forensics Science Committee, the IACP August Volmer Award, and the IACP “Oath of Honor”, through his chairmanship of the Police Ethics and Image Committee. He has also served as a member of the Justice Department Technical Working Group (TWG) in the areas of police communications, forensic sciences, police and the courts.
Currently, Marshal Berger represents the United States Marshals Service on the Executive Board of the Tampa Bay Area Chiefs of Police Association representing all Federal agencies in the Tampa Bary area. He serves on the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Board of Officers committee as a Past President member and was Chairman of the Past Presidents from 2014-2015 and IACP Parliamentarian 2006/2007. He currently serves as a member of the IACP Police Investigative Operations Committee. Marshal Berger also has served on the Florida Police Chiefs Association Executive Board, representing Past Presidents and as the Parliamentarian. In 2022 after unanimous approval of the FPCA Executive and Board Officers, it was decided to rename the FPCA Chief Executive of the Year Award as the William B. Berger Outstanding Chief Executive Officer of the Year Award.
