MEDIA STATEMENT FROM FLORIDA POLICE CHIEFS ON IOWA POLICE SHOOTINGS
TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA) today released the following statement from FPCA President Butch Arenal, Police Chief of Coconut Creek, in response to the deadly police shootings in Iowa:
“Overnight, an officer from Urbandale and an officer from Des Moines, Iowa were ambushed while sitting in their police vehicles, shot and killed for no apparent reason other than the fact they were police officers. The Urbandale and Des Moines Police Departments and their communities are devastated. Iowa is devastated. And we are devastated with them, even as we mourn the loss of two of Florida’s own who were killed this week – Taylor County Deputy Scott Williams and Miami Police Officer Jorge Sanchez.
“Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every single day. Their families don’t know if they’ll come home safely. They don’t know if each day will be their last. But they do it anyway, in the face of what the Urbandale and Des Moines Police Departments are calling ‘a clear and present danger to police officers.’
“In the wake of this tragedy and in this time of unrest, we must come together. We must continue to protect and serve. We must support our officers and deputies and troopers. We must call for an end to this violence.”
