Job Title: Lieutenant of Professional Standards

Responsibilities:
The Lieutenant of Professional Standards serves in a leadership role within the Bureau of Professional Standards and Compliance at the Florida State University Police Department (FSUPD). This position manages critical administrative functions, including internal affairs, background investigations, accreditation compliance, and evidence control. The Lieutenant leads and supervises personnel and operations that ensure integrity, transparency, and accountability within the department.
Conduct, manage, and document internal administrative investigations into allegations of employee misconduct, ensuring all investigations comply with departmental policies, state laws, CJSTC requirements, and applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Oversee, conduct, assign, and review comprehensive background investigations for all new law enforcement hires, ensuring thorough evaluation of qualifications and history in accordance with departmental and CJSTC standards. Ensure each newly hired officer’s background file contains accurate, up to-date certifications, meets all CJSTC compliance requirements, and includes necessary compliance submissions and proper record retention as mandated.
Conduct and manage agency accreditation audits, ensuring compliance with applicable standards. Perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections and inventory audits to verify operational and procedural integrity. Supervise and provide guidance to the Accreditation Manager.
Oversee the department’s Property and Evidence Unit, ensuring the proper intake, documentation, storage, and lawful disposition of property and evidence. Directly supervise the Evidence Custodian, ensuring adherence to policies, legal requirements, and best practices.
Support the Captain of Professional Standards and Compliance with administrative projects, policy development, and compliance initiatives. Provide law enforcement leadership and operational support during special events, critical incidents, or unusual occurrences as needed. Serve as the department’s Emergency Management Liaison, working closely with the University Emergency Manager and providing departmental support during activations of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Responding when necessary to support department operations, internal investigations, or critical situations. This position may be required to apprehend or supervise those who apprehend suspected criminals.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience of sworn law enforcement; or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience of sworn law enforcement. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to eight years.)
• Must meet the requirements of Section 943.13, Florida Statutes
• A valid Florida driver’s license or the ability to obtain prior to hire

This is an A&P position.
This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.
Available after hours and on-call
