The Town of Kenneth City Police Department is seeking a Police Sergeant, assigned to Patrol Operations. This person must be motivated, qualified and perform well in a team atmosphere. This Sergeant works within a group of three supervisors and reports directly to a Lieutenant. In addition to patrol duties, this Sergeant oversees one of the Agency’s specialized units, such as Traffic, Community Policing, Field Training Program, or Accreditation.

Qualifications
1. Currently employed as a full time Florida Certified Police Officer
2. At least five (5) years’ experience as a certified full-time law enforcement officer with a recognized law enforcement agency or;
3. Three (3) years with the Kenneth City Police Department as a certified law enforcement officer and;
4. A minimum of 60 college credit hours as indicated or verified on an official accredited, college or university transcript, or an associate’s degree from an accredited community college or university and;
5. Most recent performance evaluation must be rated a “meets expectations” or above.

Consistent with the Town Rules and Regulations, employees who have questionable attendance records or who have received written disciplinary reprimands within six (6) months from time of applying for a promotion may not be eligible to participate in the promotional process. Any past oral warning or written reprimands outside the six (6) month window may also be a factor for promotional consideration. The applicant should be familiar with our local area within Pinellas County, our Town, Police Department, and our strong community policing philosophy.

The applicant should have prior supervisory experience with managing a team and the ability to lead one, strong problem solving skills, and positive communication skills. The applicant must possess the ability to apply our General Orders, Florida Law and Legal Guidelines. The applicant should have experience in scheduling, community policing, traffic to include DUI initiatives, and responding to calls for service. Ability to complete internal and external reports, studies, or complete projects as assigned is required. Working knowledge of accreditation and/or Power DMS is preferred.

Police certification from the Florida Standards and Training Commission is a prerequisite to apply for this position. Applicants from outside the Pinellas County area will need to complete the screening process via Police Applicant Screening Service, (P.A.S.S.), once the applicant has been selected for a conditional offer.

The selection process will begin with a completed Town Application, to include a resume outlining the applicant’s experience and qualifications. Once these materials are reviewed there will be an interview process.

Schedule
The work schedule is five 8-hour days with rotating shifts every 4 months. This is shift work consisting of day, evening, midnight hours, weekend, holidays, and call back, shift coverage, scheduled meetings and training.

Salary
The position of Police Sergeant is governed by the P.B.A. union contract. There is a one year probationary period. The starting pay is $51,362.46. A complete list of all benefits is available upon request.

Definition
Under general supervision, ensures that subordinates perform at an appropriate level assuring that the appearance, activities, behavior, and performance of personnel within their chain of command or any subordinate requiring immediate supervision, receives the attention necessary.

Essential Functions

Tasks
Supervises personnel which entails a variety of duties to include monitoring work performance, investigating and/or recommending discipline and/or compliments, completing annual performance evaluations and career counseling, directing, mentoring, coaching; coordinates and supervises some specialized programs such as collateral duties of supervision of field training officers, reserve police officers, crossing guards, traffic enforcement, community policing, firearms armorers and traffic homicide investigator, to include annual agency in-service training.

Schedules personnel for their assigned shifts and/or areas of patrol; reviews police reports, general orders, policies and makes recommendations, completes letters, press releases, overtime reports, vacation requests, performance evaluations, memo preparations, special projects; prepares and conducts read offs; secures equipment; conducts line inspections of personnel and equipment.

Maintains equipment logs (e.g. vehicles, weapons, radar, cameras, uniforms, department manuals, issued equipment, building security, maintenance, etc.); schedules and attends meetings; attends disciplinary hearings; represents the department at public meetings; responds to calls for service as primary or back up, writes reports or conducts traffic crash or criminal investigations.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies, and procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement, investigation, National Incident Management System, security, crime detection and prevention.
• Ability to learn and apply department policies and procedures concerning officer behaviors.
• Knowledge of supervision.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the use of police equipment and weaponry.

Physical Requirements
Work involves moderate physical effort with frequent moderate to extensive exertion in an arrest, pursuit, and/or detainment situation. Must meet physical and mental job demands.

Valid State of Florida driver’s license.

Qualifications
Currently employed as a full time Florida Certified Police Officer; requires completion of three (3) years of employment with the Kenneth City Police Department or with a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a certified full time law enforcement officer with a recognized law enforcement agency; the equivalent of an associate’s degree from an accredited community college, college, or university with a major in police science, law enforcement, criminology, or related field. Requires a valid Florida driver license.
